Pinkwashing Posted on January 23rd, 2008 @ 8:21 am
I found the whole discussion regarding breast cancer in “Not Just a Pretty Face” book by Stacy Malkan so interesting and disturbing at the same time. One of the most frustrating things that the author points to is what is now called “Pinkwashing”.
“Pinkwashing Definition: a term used to describe the activities of companies and groups that position themsevles as leaders in the struggle to eradicate breast cancer while engaging in practices that may be contributing to rising rates of the disease.”
Think of companies that plaster that pink ribbon on their products to appear supportive, yet their products are filled with the exact ingredients that are being studied for links to breast cancer. Avon. Revlon. Estee Lauder.
According to the book, Jeanne Rizzo of the Breast Cancer Fund said “If they’re concerned about the cause and prevention of the disease – and I don’t know how they could not be – Estee Lauder, Revlon and Avon ought to be in the leadership on this issue, not having to be pushed into it,” Rizzo said. “When new knowledge comes to you that your product contains problematic ingredients, if you were authentic in your support for breast cancer, you would be vigilant in addressing that.” The book goes on to say: “Instead, the pink-ribbon cosmetics companies defend their use of hazardous chemicals (’it’s just a little bit’) and fight to keep their industry unregulated. It points out a lack of sincerity about the issue. They chose breast cancer because it’s women and that’s their market.”
Wow! Fighting words, I’d say! We as women need to pay more attention to what we are supporting is the lesson I have learned. If we want to support breast cancer research, we should donate directly to the organizations that do the research, instead of supporting companies that may be doing more harm than good.
We’ll see if this works since I am not sending out an email. If I don’t get a typical response I will try the emails again next week.
So this week’s offer is a FREE (yahoo!) 1 oz. jar of No Worries face cream with any purchase of $30 or more. All you have to do is write “No Worries” in the comments section (not in the coupon code – just the comments section) and you’ll receive the FREE jar with your order.
As always – this offer expires at the end of the day on Monday.
Holy COW! I just cleaned a whole set of silver in about 5 minutes. And it was NON-TOXIC! Ok – this clearly shows my dorky side but I thought this was so cool.
Here’s the story. My family uses my grandmother’s 70+ year old “everyday” silver for our every day utensils (she’s 103, by the way!). I love using it because it reminds me of her. But the only problem with using silver every day is that it tarnishes and you have to clean it. Not as tarnished as when you don’t use it, but things like egg make the tines on forks black, etc.
I was going to bring out my icky terrible smelling silver polish, but recalled seeing something at some point (that’s how helpful my brain is) about cleaning silver without polish. I remembered that it used aluminum foil. Because I’m always looking for ways to use chemical-free alternatives, I decided to search online. And there it was – the instructions on how to clean silver using baking soda, aluminum foil, water and a pan.
It was so easy that I was amazed. Literally I just soaked the pieces for a minute or so, took them out, rinsed and dried them and they looked incredible. So here’s how to do it – and I’m telling you, you’ll never buy silver polish again! (BTW – I subsequently read that the EPA considers it a “hazardous household waste” and discourages throwing it out with the regular trash. I didn’t confirm that though.)
What you’ll need: Baking soda, water, aluminum foil, a pan (I think aluminum or glass is probably best).
What you do: Line the pan with the foil. Add a layer of baking soda. Add enough water to cover the silver. Put it on the stove and heat until the water is about to boil. Add the silver and let it soak. You can see it getting shiny and losing the tarnish. You can move it around gently with tongs – but be careful not to scratch it. When it looks clean, take it out, rinse or wash it, and dry it with a soft clean towel.
That’s IT. No joke. Amazing! Apparently the chemical reaction between the silver and the aluminum and the baking soda magically does the trick. The tarnish (which is the reaction between silver and sulfur) is loosened by the warm water and baking soda, and then the sulfur is attracted to the aluminum. Pretty cool! You can tell it’s working because you can actually smell the sulfur (think hard boiled egg smell….)
So what are you waiting for? Wow and amaze your family. And just say “no” to the icky silver polish!
This week’s One Day sale is actually going to be TWO days, since I am posting this later than normal. We are having a big snowstorm and have lost power so I was a bit delayed. So please enjoy this offer until Tuesday night – woooohoooooO!!

Reusable bags Posted on January 11th, 2008 @ 7:16 pm
For my recent 40th (yipes!!) birthday, a friend gave me some very cool bags. One is a tote bag that is made from recycled juice containers. It is bright, colorful and fun. And the other bags were a set of 3 cosmetics bags made from recycled rice bags. They are great – tons of uses. All the bags are “fair trade” and they are made by women in challenging situations – the tote is made in Indonesia and the cosmetic bags in Cambodia. Why not support something great and have bags that are conversation pieces?
You can check them out at www.reusablebags.com. While your there you can learn some wildly disturbing facts about plastic bag consumption. One of the stats is that there are 1 million plastic bags consumed each minute!!
OK – I was cleaning out my emails and found this. I first saw it about a year ago. It is one of those things that I could watch daily. It just makes me smile. I mean really – is there anything better than listening to a baby laugh? And this one takes the cake.
Here we are back on track. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and is looking forward to a joyous New Year!
Today’s sale is a SUPER deal – take $15 off Nature Nurture face cream (with alphahydroxy acids and organic extracts) or No Worries face cream (for sensitive skin, with organic extracts, jojoba and avocado).
These are 2 of our top selling face products. It’s great time to try them for the first time, or to stock up if you are already a fan!
Don’t forget – you can only use the coupon code TODAY (monday, Jan 7).
As I am sitting here focusing on what my goals are for 2008 – both personally and professionally, I was just emailed a great quick read from WebMD. Perfect timing!! It is all about setting goals and finding inspiration. I highly recommend reading it.
Just to let you know – I haven’t forgotten about my commitment to the one day sale. Since the holidays fell on Mondays this year, I figured we should take a bit of a hiatus and start up again next week. So look for the offer on Monday, January 7th!
First and foremost I'm a mom. Then a wife? Then entrepreneur? Not sure about the order, but I own Garden Girl skin care - and it's the best job I've ever had! Plus I have a great husband and 2 boys that keep us on our toes. Meantime, my never ending goal is to have us live with great respect for this earth and do our part to leave it in better shape than we found it. Oh - and I'm on a big ol' mission to reduce the chemicals that we are exposed to on a daily basis. Haven't quite mastered it yet - but we're working on it!
